The festival will open with a conversation between Jessa Crispin and María Fernanda Ampuero. The two writers will discuss Crispin’s controversial book Why I Am Not a Feminist and the directions that contemporary feminism has taken. Afterwards, Puto Chino Maricón will give a concert.
Do you believe women are human beings and deserve to be treated as such? Do you believe women deserve the same rights and freedoms as men? If so, then you’re a feminist... or so they say. Feminism is being co-opted by neoliberal strategies to gain acceptance, often resulting in a trivial, polite, toothless stance that barely defies the status quo. In her controversial manifesto Why I Am Not a Feminist, Jessa Crispin calls for something more than just posing with a T-shirt that reads “The Future Is Female”.
