Sabiwa produces, records and synthesises sounds influenced by traditional Asian folk music and mixes them with the digital images she creates for her live performances.
The seventh edition of the She Makes Noise festival opens with the Spanish debut of audiovisual artist Sabiwa, one of the leading names in experimental electronic music, design and video in her home country of Taiwan.
She says that her first approach to music took place inside an aquarium. She began playing the cello at age 12 and became a virtuoso cellist, later developing a deep interest in and evolving towards electronic music, sound design and field recordings. In recent years, in addition to her work as a producer, she has become renowned for her videos, creating visual sessions for her own concerts.
She currently lives and works in Taiwan and Europe. At She Makes Noise, Sabiwa is presenting a new performance in which she reflects on the pandemic situation: a moment in history that has blurred the lines between worlds and between physical and virtual interactions. Sabiwa’s proposal addresses that non-place, that vague, indeterminate space where reality does not exist and human beings experience true freedom, just before we unplug and log out.
Sabiwa is a member of the London-based cultural platform Chinabot, dedicated to showcasing the electronic music of the Asian diaspora across the globe. She released her albums Reincarnation and DaBa with this platform.
