she makes noise is back, a fun, multidisciplinary, activist festival featuring the queens of noise and techno and the dance rhythms of today’s youth. Artists who’ve reinvented the concept of nightlife and club culture. Rhythms infused with a feminist decolonial perspective that transport us to Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Since its first edition, she makes noise has aimed to explore today’s society from a critical perspective that challenges the heteronormative patriarchal system without wallowing in negativity and complaints, instead focusing on rethinking the position of women on the contemporary audiovisual arts stage. We like and are interested in analysing differences, the upside of errors and glitches as productive aesthetics. For all these reasons, year after year the festival continues to celebrate a more fluid, cross-cutting notion of “she-dom”.

This fourth edition will feature six music performances, divided between the auditorium and the courtyard, as well as a film cycle and the digital art workshop “Glitch Art: Seeing Sound, Hearing Images” led by Blanca Rego, aka _blank, who will also close the festival with a performance. Plus, we’ll create an electronic breeding ground with our Family Activities programme, and throw a Post Party to keep on dancing.

The live music begins on Thursday 18 in the courtyard, where we’ll give a warm welcome to Chinese-born artist Pan Daijing on her first visit to our city.

On Friday 19 dance beats will flood the courtyard again, this time with an intensely youthful, decolonial flavour. We’ll bounce to the rhythms of Coral Foxworth, aka FXWRK, making her Spanish debut; Klein, whose powerful live performance includes visuals; and Jamz Supernova.

To wrap up the music programme, on Saturday 20 we’ll enjoy a double session of experimental electronic music in the auditorium featuring Beatrice Dillon and the Madrid premiere of Arkhé, a show created by OKKRE, Uge Pañeda’s new solo project.

The film cycle includes five pieces (three feature films and two shorts) never shown before in Madrid, offering a broad sampling of the boldest audiovisual creations to emerge in the past year: films that portray such diverse worlds as transgender nightlife in Brazil, a Danish club for teens, sects in Chile and Carnival in the Bahamas. Each film boasts a perfect blend of form and substance and, in keeping with the spirit of this festival, a strong emphasis on the soundtrack and audio work. Vivian Ostrovsky, renowned filmmaker and icon of experimental film, Marialy Rivas and Evangelia Kranioti, two of the most representative contemporary film directors working today, and up-and-coming auteurs Annika Berg and Rhea Storr are the stars of this film programme.

This year’s workshop will be led by digital artist Blanca Rego, aka _blank, who works with data bending and will also give a performance on Sunday 21 open to the public.

Curated by Natalia Piñuel (music and performance) and Enrique Piñuel (audiovisuals)
