The Magnetic Terrace 2022. Vulnerable Critters

Titane won the Palme d’Or at the 2021 Cannes Festival. In her second feature film, Cronenberg’s successor creates a cross between the concept of “New Flesh” (fusion of body and machine) and the Electra complex to revolutionise the genre.

Titane, by Julia Ducournau. France, 2021. 108’

A young man with a beat-up face is found in an airport. He claims to be Adrien Legrand, a boy who disappeared 10 years ago. For his father, Vincent, it’s the end of a long nightmare, and he takes him home. However, there has also been a string of horrible murders in the area.

Julia Ducournau (Paris, 1983) was raised by doctors, who planted the seed of her obsession with flesh and the body. She is a graduate of La Fémis, where she studied screenwriting. Her reputation began to spread in 2011, when her short Junior was selected for the Cannes Critics’ Week and won the People’s Choice Award at the Premiers Plans d’Angers Festival. Raw, her first feature, won the FIPRESCI prize at the 2016 Critics’ Week. The film went on to screen and win awards at several international festivals (Toronto, Sundance, Gerardmer, Sitges) and was distributed worldwide. In 2019, Ducournau received the Gan Fondation Award for Titane, her second feature film, which also won the Palme d’Or at the 2021 Cannes Festival.
