The Magnetic Terrace 2021: A Vegetal Encounter

A love story between two young men, a soldier and a peasant, evolves into a dream about the rainforest, a journey to the heart of the jungle where legends become reality.

Tropical Malady, by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Thailand. 2004. 35mm. 118'

Tropical Malady has a two-part structure. The first part explores the romance between two men in a village in the jungle: the walks they take, shared moments with family, and leisurely evenings at bars, karaokes and cinemas in the city. But this everyday reality gives way to the supernatural. After a character disappears, an abstract, hypnotic space emerges in which folk tales come to life as well as the local legend according to which a man can turn into another creature—in this case, a tiger hunting a soldier.

Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s third full-length feature, it was named best film of the year by the French magazine Cahiers du cinéma. Its numerous accolades also include the jury prize at Cannes.

The film will be screened in 35mm.

A visual artist and film-maker, Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Thailand, 1950) studied architecture at Khon Kaen University and then did a master’s course in fine arts, specialising in cinematography, at the School of Art Institute of Chicago. In 1999 he founded Kick the Machine, the production company through which he manages his film projects. One of the leading figures on the contemporary scene, his films shun conventional narratives. His titles include Mysterious Object at Noon (2000), Blissfully Yours (2002), Syndromes and a Century (2006), Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010), and Cemetery of Splendour (2015), which won numerous awards at international festivals.
