The exhibition presents selected works from the Treger/Saint Silvestre Collection, one of the richest and most comprehensive collections of art brut in Europe, housed at the Centro de Arte Oliva in São João da Madeira, Portugal.
This group exhibition examines an art that makes the tiny great, eschewing high-sounding categories so as to focus on elements that make up the aesthetics of our day-to-day existence. It assumes the different paces and the bombardment of images from the politics of happiness, from the very flow of existence.
Alarming messages about the state of planet earth and its future abound. Every week sees a new environmental catastrophe or nature falls prey to yet another attack. A comparison of the state of the planet in 1970, in 2000 and in 2019 reveals that environmental degradation is speeding up. If this pace continues, how long before the planet becomes uninhabitable?
This year IDEM, the International Performing Arts Festival, welcomes the work of Alberto de Torres (Madrid, 1974). The artist is a member of Debajo del Sombrero, an art platform modelled on European and American “supported studios”, where artists with mental disabilities are able to work with assistance.
