She Makes Noise 2022

This short film session at the She Makes Noise festival features three titles in which the body occupies a particularly prominent place on the screen, both on a physical level, through its choreographic, performative and even sculptural presence, as well as on a narrative level.

Madrugada [Dawn], by Leonor Noivo. Portugal. 2021. 28’. Original soundtrack with Spanish subtitles (Madrid premiere)

María, a 50-year-old cleaner, starts to show signs of wanting to belong somewhere else. Scales appear on her skin and roots on her legs, and she can hear the sound of water. She dreams of being a fish. One day her daughter discovers that she has disappeared and, through the memory of her gestures and meetings with her mother, reconstructs a possible explanation for her escape. This is a film about the metamorphosis of someone whose life doesn't belong to them.

Leonor Noivo (Portugal, 1976). Film-maker Leonor Noivo studied architecture and photography before enrolling in the Lisbon Theatre and Film School, where she specialised in film editing and direction in 2004. As a screenwriter, producer and assistant director, she has worked with film-makers João Pedro Rodrigues, Filipa Reis, João Salaviza, João Nicolau, Marília Rocha and Pedro Pinho. She is the co-founder of the production company Terratreme. She embarked on her career as a film director in 2001 with the short film Aside Macao, following it up with a dozen more titles. Her most recent films are September (2016), Tudo o que imagino (2017), Raposa (2019) and Madrugada ;(2021), which have been screened at some of the most important international film festivals, including Locarno (Switzerland), Rotterdam (Netherlands), Vienalle (Austria), FidMarseille (France), Clermont-Ferrand (France), Ficunam (Mexico), Indielisboa (Portugal) and Vila do Conde (Portugal). She has received numerous awards.

Tatuado nos ollos levamos o pouso [Tattooed on Our Eyes We Carry the Aftertaste], by Diana Toucedo. Spain 2022. 26’. Original soundtrack with Spanish subtitles (Madrid premiere)

Every day at low tide, the seafood workers of a small town in southern Galicia strive to sow, dig and protect the threshold between the sea water and the sand. The film shows the women at work, their confidences and their mutual support in a matriarchal structure with a strong sense of community belonging In symbiosis, a common awareness and affection emerges from their bodies, gestures and words, crafting a collective choreography of daily life. Original soundtrack composed by BFlecha.

Diana Toucedo .(Spain, 1982). A film director and editor, Diana Toucedo currently lives in Barcelona where she develops her projects and teaches a film editing postgraduate course at Pompeu Fabra University. She has worked as an editor on around 20 feature films, including Los caballos mueren al amanecer, by Ione Atenea (2022) Nación, by Margarita Ledo (2021); O quinto evanxeo de Gaspar Hauser, by Alberto Gracia (2018); Júlia Ist, by Elena Martín (2017) and em>La noche que no acaba, by Isaki Lacuesta (2010). As a director, she made several short films and then her feature debut in 2018 with Trinta lumes, which won around 10 awards Her latest work to date is Tatuado nos ollos levamos o pouso (2022), which received its world premiere at Visions du Réel (Switzerland).

Dear Darkness, by Antoinette Zwirchmayr. Austria. 2021. 30’. Original soundtrack with Spanish subtitles (Spanish premiere)

Olga, Yvonne and Manon, three former best friends, meet again after 20 years in the town where one of them lives. Their shared past of dreams and fantasies about their lives is very far removed from the present. What was once normal has become strange, prompting tensions between the women. Filmed in 16mm with graceful staging, the alienated bodies of the three protagonists meander across the screen, almost acquiring a sculptural presence.

Antoinette Zwirchmayr (Austria, 1989). Visual artist and film-maker Antoinette Zwirchmayr studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. The author of around 20 films since her debut in 2010 with Lady Luck, she is one of the most prolific and interesting film-makers of the last decade. Her films have been screened at international festivals like the Berlinale (Germany), Oberhausen (Alemania), FID Marseille (France), Ann Arbor (USA), Viennale (Austria), Ji.hlava (Czech Republic), CPH: DOX (Denmark), SEFF (Spain) and Indielisboa (Portugal), and she has received several awards and grants during the course of her career.
