All over the world, women are promoting structural changes that will put an end to centuries of enforced silence and denial of their rights and privileges as full citizens. Their demands for a more prominent and visible role in social, political and economic life are sweeping across the planet.
But the progress made in acknowledging and guaranteeing humans rights for the female human race is also facing worldwide threats. As the patriarchy rearms, women are devising local and transnational strategies to ensure real and effective gender equality. Their significant influence is directly responsible for the marked improvement in the quality of democracy, but it has also improved the lives of many on a much smaller scale.
