Journalist and writer Zhang Lijia explores transformations in gender relations by comparing the Maoist period and present-day China from the perspective of experience, offering a structural analysis of the limited options available to young working-class Chinese women, forced to choose between the factory and prostitution.

Speaker

Zhang Lijia currently lives in London and Beijing and is one of the few Chinese women authors who write in English for international media outlets such as The New York Times. Her memoirs, published under the title Socialism is Great! (2019), have received critical acclaim and been translated into seven languages. Her novel Lotus, which describes the life of a prostitute and was inspired by her grandmother’s story, has recently been translated and published in Spanish by Editorial Renacimiento.

Coordinated by: Confucius Institute, Madrid.
