Lizzie Borden cycle

7 Feb - 14 Feb 2017
Lizzie Borden cycle

Self-taught director, feminist and queer cinema pioneer Lizzie Borden makes films rife with tales of confrontation that defy the logics of the established order and use cinematography as a tool of political action, with plenty of room for formal experimentation.

Lizzie Borden's work moves in the interstices between outsider, underground and indie film, functioning as a mechanism capable of counteracting the dominant narratives of the commercial silver screen. Three movies, all written and directed by Borden, stand out in her filmography: the rarely shown Regrouping (1976), a feminist film that translates the rallying cry "the personal is political" into images; Born in Flames (1983), a work in the hybrid genre of radical-Afrofuturist-feminist sci-fi vérité; and the documentary Working Girls (1987).

Lizzie Borden will be with us on 14 and 15 February.
