Contemporary Film: Under the Influence of a Dogma

A programme of religious comedies and dramas about the survival or disappearance of different faiths in modern life, about how religion and its practices adapt to the contemporary urban world.

The selected films feature individuals on three different continents who suffer an identity crisis because of the predominant, or dying, religion in their respective countries. This cycle takes a tolerant, transparent look at the existential doubts of people who are victims of the battle between tradition and modernity in a religious setting, regardless of the dogma or creed in question.

After travelling to Israel to hear the story of the young ultra-Orthodox Jewish hero of Tikkun who gradually loses his faith after surviving a heart attack, we’ll examine the rise of evangelical Christianity in Brazil to the rhythm of the samba and maracatu in Azogue Nazaré, and discover the presence of ancestral spirits in modern-day Nigeria with the Afro-Futurist sci-fi comedy The Lost Okoroshi.

All the feature films premiered at the festivals of Locarno, Rotterdam, Toronto and Berlin.

Cycle organised in collaboration with Carlota Moseguí
