The urgency of understanding: narratives in the context of contemporary conflicts

In a world ravaged by humanitarian crises, protracted conflicts and new forms of violence, understanding becomes an essential and deeply political act. Beyond headlines and simplified narratives, we urgently need to equip ourselves with tools that allow us to gain an in-depth understanding of global dynamics, relationships between actors, emerging tensions and many questions that are not easy to answer.

With around 300 million people requiring humanitarian assistance in an international scenario marked by armed conflict in more than fifty countries, while the cumulative effects of climate change drive forced displacement processes affecting more than 123 million people. Added to this picture are increasingly polarising narratives and security frameworks that not only make it difficult to understand the structural causes of these crises, but also tend to silence or distort the voices of those who suffer from them. In this context, it is important to build spaces that encourage critical reflection, capable of providing keys to understanding the transformations underway and the evolution of the actors involved. Organised by La Casa Encendida and the Institute for Studies on Conflicts and Humanitarian Action.
