Rooted in punk and DIY and taking inspiration from Maya Angelou, Public Enemy, Sun Ra and Malcolm X, Moor Mother is the main expressive outlet of interdisciplinary artist Camae Ayewa, a poet, producer, activist, educator and playwright whose work ties in directly with the Afrofuturist tradition and the civil rights movement.
The result is a politically charged spoken-word bomb against a dark, aggressive, apocalyptic musical background that ranges from furious free jazz to electronic dissonance, incorporating unsettling atmospheres and a post-industrial rawness that shines a spotlight on the historical trauma of the black experience using Afrocentric beats, abrasive textures and a cathartic outpouring of the pain and rage of a mistreated race where Afro-punk, techno, blues and noise are tools for denouncing and confronting white capitalism.
This hyperactive, committed artist from Philadelphia is also at the helm of projects like Irreversible Entanglements, Black Quantum Futurism and 700 Bliss, and has collaborated with an endless list of artists that includes The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Billy Woods, Sons of Kemet, Zonal feat. The Bug and Justin Broadrick (Godflesh), and Pink Siifu.
The Wire magazine hailed her debut Fetish Bones (2016) as third best album of the year. That same year, Moor Mother was named one of the 10 artists to watch by Rolling Stone magazine and Bandcamp’s artist of the year.
