The use of camouflage as a natural defence mechanism has been refined by humans, primarily for military purposes. Even so, the aesthetic fascination accidentally exerted upon us by forms of natural or artificial camouflage has never been completely separated from that bellicose functionality. One of the aims of this project is to examine this phenomenon in reverse, how the merely beautiful can also be deliberately functional. Camouflages shows us how the same tool can be used to address themes related to identity, violence, politics and society through the work of 33 artists, including Rogelio López Cuenca, Laura Marte, Manuel Cerda, Laurent La Gamba, Maider López, Monica Duncan and Lara Odell, Liu Bolin, Desiree Palmen, Leo Fabrizio, Chema Cobo, Adonis Flores, Mateo Maté, Juan Luis Moraza, Harvey Opgenorth, Carlos Miranda, José Ramón Amondarain, Joan Fontcuberta, Yasumasa Morimura, Domingo Sánchez Blanco, Sonia La Mur, Ángeles Agrela, Gina Zacharias, Lalla A. Essaydi, Carmen Mariscal and Francesca Woodman.
