9th Márgenes Festival

26 Nov - 29 Nov 2019
9th Márgenes Festival

Welcome back to Márgenes, the festival that celebrates new audiovisual narratives and a leading showcase for the edgiest, most independent Ibero-American films. This flexible, provocative, innovative competition constantly reflects on the direction in which cinema and contemporary society are headed.

Over the past eight editions, Márgenes has become a national and international beacon of the most plural, independent developments in Ibero-American cinema. This year, the festival presents a contemporary film cycle at La Casa Encendida, “New Frontiers of Anti-Realism in Contemporary Latin American Cinema”, featuring the work of new Latin American directors who invent sci-fi universes or magical plots to denounce social and political inequality in their countries. Premiered at prestigious international film festivals like Berlin, Locarno and Toronto, their works explore a wide range of themes from different perspectives, such as sexism in Chilean and Peruvian society, transphobia and homophobia in rural Argentina, the turbulent and corrupt history of the Brazilian government from 1959 to 2017, or a woman’s path to female emancipation through Quechua and Peruvian magical musical folklore. A cycle about political, feminist and LGBTIQ activism in recent Latin American fantasy film.

MRG//WORK
La Casa Encendida is also hosting the 5th edition of the analysis, development and production forum for auteur audiovisual productions from Spain, Portugal or Latin America. Plus, for the first time this year MRG//WORK will be part of the RAW residency programme, thanks to the partnership between the Márgenes Festival and Doclisboa, branching out into the field of research and criticism. The selected projects in the Creative category are:

  • Sobre las nubes by María Aparicio (Argentina)
  • Pepe, la imaginación en el tercer cine by Nelson Carlos de los Santos (Dominican Republic)
  • Miraba caer las gotas iluminadas by José Luis Gutiérrez (Mexico)
  • Muyeres by Marta Lallana (Spain)
  • En busca de la ciudad perdida by Colectivo Maldito Zine (Spain-Colombia)
  • El cielo en la tierra by María Antón Cabot (Spain)

Two researchers were also selected: Miguel Zozaya (Spain) and Lucía Salas (Argentina). Thanks to the support of Fundación Montemadrid, this edition of MRG//WORK will present the first La Casa Encendida Award for Audiovisual Creation, with a cash prize of €4,000, a new stimulus for independent audiovisual creation and emerging talent.
