Puwerty 2020 - September

This year, La Casa Encendida has a double appointment with young art on two different dates. On the first day, Saturday, 19 September, we’ll reflect on future prospects in times of crisis and discuss the narratives that younger generations use to recount their reality with round tables, workshops and screenings. The second encounter, in December, will be devoted to dance and celebration.

The round table session Inbox: SOS to Art proposes a debate on how the health crisis has revolutionised the way we create and make a creative living. Samantha Hudson, Manuel Alba and the artists from Proyecto Galaxxia will discuss how the current situation is affecting the funding and development of artistic projects, and the particularly difficult circumstances of artists who are just starting out.

Olaya Pedrayes invites us to reflect on identity through printmaking in her Exlibris workshop, while Jorge Van der Eynde’s memes workshop explores how these elements have become an indispensable part of our generational discourse.

Is it possible to philosophise in a generation with a TikTok-length attention span? Are we fed up with Twitter threads that mix Bad Gyal and Hegel? Deep Thinkers? Philosophy for TikTokers will unite the omnipresent Elizabeth Duval and Gen Z doctor Rodrigo G. Marina in a debate moderated by Mateu Roncero.

And to wrap up this first instalment of Puwerty 2020, a cycle of pre-pandemic shorts for understanding the post-COVID era. Celia Dosal, Jorge López and Eva Saiz will present their creations and discuss how short films made between four walls have gone from being the quintessential outlet of budding filmmakers to the only possible format when the end of world looms near.

This fourth edition of Puwerty is curated by Ángel Aranda and María del Río and supported by the Creative Youth Production Grants programme at the Instituto de la Juventud (INJUVE) to visibilise the work of young artists in different fields of contemporary creativity.
