The Birth Canal. Andrés Fernández

‘The Birth Canal’ is a virtual reality project developed by Kinerama based on the work of Andrés Fernández, an artist from Estudio Debajo del Sombrero. An assisted art studio that supports artists with intellectual disabilities.
Andrés Fernández's work forms a large cartographic system of maps and plans, as well as texts, lists and various enumerations. It is a body of work methodically articulated, in which he displays a compendium of beliefs and experiences put into symbolic discourse.
Among the considerable number of maps produced by Andrés to date, the maps of the “Birth Canal” are particularly striking. These maps describe the places the canal passes through on its way to birth, in a pattern that is difficult to decipher due to the dense overlapping of elements and levels of apparently different nature and origin.
Deciphering the enigma of birth is a decisive part of these maps, as there is no greater enigma than knowing that one is born, and Andrés knows this. He knows he was born. But his knowledge, because it is half-veiled, radiates with greater force than normal, spurred on by the desire to finally reveal something that is hidden from him, assisted by a nascent poetic consciousness, for which everything is creation.
