Filled with nostalgia for an era she never lived, choreographer Katerina Andreou has created Rave to Lament. A fleeting, unique and impulsive motion-piece inspired by the (sub)urban music scene of Athens in 1989, influenced by American and UK rave culture.

Target audience: General public
Location: Patio
Duration: 30 minutes 30 seconds
Price: 10€

In autumn 2020, Greek-born choreographer Katerina Andreou met Voltnoi Berge, a man who lived through the transformation of the (sub)urban music scene in Athens beginning in 1989. This scene was then influenced by the rave culture of the United States and England and driven by house and techno music. Too young to participate in the excitement of these spontaneous gatherings, Andreou immersed herself in stories and books about them and in the music shared by Berge. At the same time, she conducted her own research into this mainly sound-based movement. Myths and rumours soon took over the reality of this underground scene which, according to the choreographer, deserves to be approached with a physical rather than a mental focus. Filled with nostalgia for an era she did not live through, Andreou created Rave to Lament: a fleeting, unique and impulsive motion-piece that, rather than looking to the past, seeks to be part of the present.

Duration: 30 minutes.

Katerina Andreou. Born in Athens, Katerina Andreou lives in France. She graduated from the Faculty of Law in Athens and the National School of Dance in Athens, is following the ESSAIS programme at the CNDC in Angers and holds a master’s degree in choreographic research (Paris 8).

As a performer, she has collaborated with DD Dorvillier, Anne Lise Le Gac, Lenio Kaklea, Bryan Campbell, Dinis Machado, Emmanuelle Huynh and Ana Rita Teodoro. In her own work she develops a specific physical practice for each of her projects and seeks states of presence resulting from a constant negotiation between contrasting or even contradictory tasks, fictions or universes, often questioning notions of authority and censorship.

She herself creates the sound environment for her performances, using it as her main dramaturgical tool. She received the Prix Jardin d’Europe at the ImPulsTanz festival in 2016 for her solo A Kind of Fierce. She then created the solo BSTRD (2018), the duet Zeppelin Bend (2021) with Natali Mandila, the performance Rave to Lament (2021) and, more recently, the solo Mourn Baby Mourn (2022). She is an associate artist of the National Choreographic Centre of Caen in Normandy for 2022-2024.
