Bobby Baker. Jars of Chutney

22 Feb 2019

The Chutney Jars exhibition aims to publicize the richness and relevance of Bobby Baker's work by offering for the first time a tour of the series of drawings, watercolors and engravings that he has systematically made during his career. The exhibition introduces us to the artist's particular universe, her everyday references and her sense of humor, axes on which she bases much of her work.

Through a direct and crude language but full of humor, Baker's performances, installations and drawings explore the everyday life and privacy of an individual as she occupies different social spaces: a woman/middle class British/a mother/a artist/a psychiatric patient/a cancer patient. The observation and representation of everyday life, that which is socially identified as private because it is valued as irrelevant or taboo, is a practice that, although it begins to acquire a certain visibility in the contemporary age, is never fully freed from these stigmas.
