Running and huerting is a different way to discover and discuss inner-city agriculture and gardening: a 10-km running tour where we will see two different kinds of urban community gardens.

Duration: 2 hours

As we trot along the asphalt in our trainers and cut through three parks in southern Madrid (Emperatriz María de Austria, Las Cruces and Pinar de San José), we'll discover two city kitchen gardens. Moving at a pace of 5'30"/6' per kilometre—doable for even sporadic joggers—we will wend our way along paved and dirt paths, pass through urban parks unknown to many Madrid natives, and end in a pine grove that stubbornly resists the encroaching metropolis.

We will see one inner-city kitchen garden, Aliseda 18, whose founders decided to bring organic buying groups to the Pan Bendito neighbourhood.

After crossing the Park of Las Cruces we'll come to Pinar de San José, a pine wood in the heart of Carabanchel and home to one of Madrid's new urban community gardens, El Pinar.

Along the way we'll be accompanied by a professional runner with experience in city races and cross-country trails.
