Electronic Body Music (EBM), synth-pop and new beat emerged across Europe in the 1980s as part of the underground electronic music scene associated with inner-city and fringe neighbourhoods. In Valencia they were the musical base for Spain’s largest clubbing movement at the time, which soon spread along the entire east coast and inland. To an extent, these genres triggered the phenomenon in Spain, a type of night life where thousands of young people would flock at weekends to discotheques, giving rise to the so-called “Ruta del Bakalao”.
Years later, far from becoming a thing of the past, they have evolved into firmly established styles with legions of followers of all ages who enjoy a vast international network of clubs and festivals on the same wavelength. 80%BAUL, the solo project of Raúl Paez (1995, Hospitalet de Llobregat), forms part of this circuit and exemplifies its evolution.
