On Friday evening/night, the courtyard will be all about rhythm: a rhythm expressed in different forms and identities, but which is always the point of departure for the creations of NSDOS, HHY & The Kampala Unit and Loraine James.

Duration: 3 hours

HHY & The Kampala Unit

A trio of synthetic percussion, kingdom-come horns and viral electronics delivering Ugandan futuristic music. An ensemble founded by Jonathan Saldanha (from HHY & The Macumbas), joining master percussionist from Congo, Sekelembele (Fulu Miziki), with trumpet player and ghetto youth activist Florence Lugemwa in a mesmerizing polyrhythmic pressure configuration. Their debut album Lithium Blast was released in October 2020 on Nyege Nyege Tapes, with great reviews.

NSDOS

Possibly one of the most well-rounded artists of his generation, Paris native NSDOS uses body movements to develop his music and his visuals, creating a connection between these three fields to offer a completely captivating sensory experience.

This multidisciplinary artist studied at the international school of dance in Paris, where he began to feel the need to create sounds to support his movements. He aims to forge a bond between matter and machine by using his own motion sensors, interactive devices and creative coding programs, injecting them in the rectilinear skeleton of techno to generate an organic matrix.

In recent years, he has been giving workshops and performing at prestigious festivals like MUTEK in Mexico and Tokyo, the Gwangju Biennale in South Korea and MAM in Rio de Janeiro. He recently received a grant for his work with motion sensors from IMPACT, the International Meeting in Performing Arts and Creative Technologies (Belgium).

Loraine James

Prolific London artist Loraine James has become one of the most prominent figures on the international electronic scene, earning the respect and acclaim of many industry veterans.

In a few short years, Loraine has never ceased to surprise and amaze her audiences by crafting an intensely personal and unmistakeable sound cosmos.

Her debut album, For You and I (2019), released by her parent label Hyperdub, was named Album of the Year by both DJ Mag and Quietus, and since then she has put out an EP and an album with the same label, as well as several singles and remixes for artists like Jessy Lanza and Gordi.

James’s latest album, Reflection, is a turbulent expression of inner space, laid out with unflinching honesty, that offers gentle empathy and bitter-sweet hope, pared down and confident, tending to delve into pop music in her own way and taking the listener through a year in the life of a young black queer woman and her acolytes in a world that suddenly stopped moving.
