Friday night, dedicated to dance and listening, combines two of the festival’s central themes: bodies in motion and critical thinking. Performances by the Afro-Portuguese producer and singer Xexa and the French-Tunisian artist Deena Abdelwahed bring a mixture of electronic beats and different manifestations of the African diaspora in Europe.
Xexa presents Vibraçôes da Prata. The artist explores the voice, blending traditional rhythms of the continent, synths and ambient to achieve an organic, fluid stage presence. Her intention with this album is to “study the feeling of listening to music as an environment one inhabits and not as a sound that follows you throughout the day. Walk into, instead of listening to, an ambience.” This is her debut in Madrid after performing at other festivals like Primavera Sound.
Xexa is a producer, multidisciplinary artist and singer with African ancestry based in London. Her project is packed with immersive experiences, connections to nature and Afrofuturism. She is a young talent promoted by one of the most interesting labels on the scene, the Lisbon-based Príncipe Discos.
Deena Abdelwahed comes to Madrid with her latest project Jbal Rrsas in the format of an audiovisual DJ set, after playing at Sónar and the Rewire Festival. She was one of the artists who took part in the third edition of She Makes Noise and is back for the tenth anniversary with her new project, a tribute to her favourite mountain in Tunisia.
After starting out in a jazz band and multiple interventions on the North African electronic scene, the Tunisian producer and DJ relocated to France and signed with the InFiné label, releasing her internationally acclaimed album Khonnar and several EPs. Her work represents an exciting attempt to reappropriate the essential elements that make up the diversity of Arab music, drawing inspiration from electronic dance music influenced by today’s avant-garde and experimental scene.
