We live in the era of misinformation and “fake news”, where citizens are manipulated via electronic devices, unscrupulous companies buy and sell our data, the line between fact and opinion is blurred, and the quality of information is deteriorating. Defending good journalism is an indispensable tool for ensuring the survival of democracy.

Journalism encompasses a wide variety of jobs, professions and genres. Reporting from conflict zones is a job with very specific requirements, but the first is a willingness to share the pain of others and carry it with you always. This necessary condition goes to the very heart of what makes good journalism: the quest for truth.
Alfonso Armada, reporter, writer and president of the Spanish Section of Reporters Without Borders (RSF), will reflect on this in a talk titled “Recurring Propaganda Mechanisms, from Bosnia to Rwanda and 9/11: Memoirs of a Special Correspondent.”
In the second part of the session, Alfonso Bauluz, a journalist with the Efe agency and member of RSF, will talk about the figure of the journalist “embedded” with troops and how the military controls information in his lecture, “Press and Manipulation: The Pentagon and Information Ops.”
The floor will be opened up for debate after the talks.
