Territory, Natural Resources, Climate and Poverty

22 Nov 2016

Novels can address the dilemmas of their times and be powerful tools for denouncing problems, raising awareness and instilling values in readers. A number of authors have chosen to make environmental issues an important and, in some works, pivotal part of their narratives. This is the case of The Hungry Tide by Indian author Amitav Ghosh.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

An example of a novel that addresses the issues of its time and helps to publicly denounce them is The Hungry Tide by Indian author Amitav Ghosh. The work is set in the Sundarbans, a region of islands, channels and mangrove forests at the mouth of the River Ganges, straddling the border between India and Bangladesh.

After introductions by Nacho Santos, coordinator of the Ecoclub reading group, and a member of the Ecocritical Research Group (GIECO), the audience will be invited to take part in a moderated discussion. Participants are recommended to read the book before the session.

Activity organised by the Ecoclub reading group in collaboration with GIECO (Ecocritical Research Group) at the University of Alcalá de Henares.
