Even in the face of increasingly frequent extreme climate events, we still lack the prevention and preparation tools that will enable society to adapt and react quickly. We know what's coming, but are we preparing for it?

At this session featuring leading experts and the documentary Resilience Engineered, we will learn about developing resilience in the world, the actions of the UN, Spain's national adaptation plan, and how to prepare on a local level, with a focus on water as the crucial vector.

Speakers:

  • Hugo Morán, Secretary of State for the Environment. Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge. Government of Spain.
  • Mariano González Sáez, Deputy Minister for the Environment of the Government of Madrid, has occupied a variety of senior government positions in the environmental field.
  • Nuria Hernández-Mora, PhD in Geography, member of the board of trustees of Spain's New Water Culture Foundation, expert analyst of water resources governance. With over 20 years of experience in projects related to this theme, she has worked for organisations like the European Commission and the World Bank.
  • Also present via an interview recorded specially for the cycle, Gonzalo Muñoz Abogabir, High Level Climate Action Champion of the United Nations for the UN Conference on Climate Change, whose role is to build bridges between the political actors and institutions at different levels, civil society and the business world. Co-founder of TriCiclos, Sistema B and member of BLab and the Global Foodbanking Network, he designed Race to Resilience, the UN campaign to increase the resilience of 4 billion people by 2030 in three key areas: coastal communities, urban communities and rural zones.

Documentary:

Resilience Engineered. United States, 2020. 75’. Original soundtrack with Spanish subtitles

Today, more people than ever before depend on infrastructures that provide essential energy, water, transport and communication services that deliver food, healthcare and education. The Resilience Shift, a platform dedicated to inspiring and empowering the global community, has produced a documentary series addressing three key themes: how to prepare ourselves for the risks of the future; the policies, investments and regulations necessary for local action; and the construction of the collective purpose to assume the responsibility of acting now before a disaster happens.
