An approximation to indigenous cultures and gender dissidences in Latin American LGTBIQ+ communities through the work of Simon(e) Jaikiriuma Paetau, who explores other ways of creating an audiovisual imaginary based on themes such as identity, memory and intersectional feminism.

In the Colombian coffee region that is sometimes known as the Coffee Triangle, the ancestral mythical monster Aribada is resurrected and joins Las Traviesas, a group of indigenous trans women from the Embera people who struggle every day against structural, racist and transphobic violence in their attempt to preserve the essence that defines them as human beings. Their goal is to create their own trans-futurist community. They dream and imagine a queer utopia where the possibilities of being a woman transcend binary gender categories. In formal terms, the film creates a space that blurs the boundary between fiction, documentary and performance, challenging the classic narrative and decolonising the language of western cinematography through a unique aesthetic and spiritual universe that merges ancient tradition with technology. Simon(e) Jaikiriuma Paetau (Germany, 1986). Of German-Colombian origin, multidisciplinary artist Simon(e) Jaikiriuma Paetau's work straddles video installation, film and performance. They studied media art at the KHM Cologne (Germany) and film at the EICTV in San Antonio de los Baños (Cuba). Their films have been screened at Documenta14 Kassel and other festivals, including Cannes (France), Rotterdam (Países Bajos), MoMa New Directors (New York), Oberhausen (Germany), Cartagena (Colombia), Zinegoak (Spain) and Vila do Conde (Portugal), winning several awards.
Natalia Escobar (Colombia, 1986). Multidisciplinary artist Natalia Escobar's work encompasses moving images, music and installations, addresses themes such as Andean intersectional feminism, phenomenology, identity and memory. She took part in the 2019 edition of She Makes Noise with her musical alter ego Poison Arrow.

A queer artist self-penetrates herself with a cob of corn to protest about the fields of transgenic corn, not knowing how close she is to death. Her sister follows her steps and carries her ashes across the Amazon in a quest that turns into a process of spiritual and sexual liberation. Her path is littered with encounters and inescapable stories of colonialism, modernisation and the current political situation in Brazil and Latin America in general. This queer-punt road movie flows freely between performance, political comment and fiction with a tropical atmosphere that sets the scene for games, protests and metamorphosis.
The film proposes a break with the hetero-normative narrative and prevailing capitalist knowledge, exploring indigenous wisdom and the experience of trance states while simultaneously approaching the fluidity of bodies and identities in an exuberant tropical setting. Thais Guisasola (Brazil, 1987) is a film-maker and performer whose work is inspired by post-colonial, feminist queer theories and ancestral indigenous cultures. This film won the Best Direction award at the Cartagena de Indias International Festival.
