Chuquimamani-Condori

A member of the Pakajaqi nation of the indigenous Aymara people of South America, Chuquimamani-Condori presents their latest album DJ E. The work mixes the traditional drums and ceremonial music of their Pakajaqi family with synths, cumbia samples, abrasive noises (e.g. a circular saw) and other sounds that recreate the cacophony of the first dawn, the so-called chuqichinchay. The result is a vibrant collage of cultures, a crude, chaotic and even violent sound overload.

Self-released and unmastered, the album also features their brother on guitar and their father on circular saw. The mastering primarily involves the use of compressors, which reduce the dynamic range of each instrument (the contrast between their softest and loudest points) to make the track feel less cluttered and more stylised. But in their music, as in their life, Chuquimamani-Condori is unwilling to quiet any aspect of themselves to create the illusion of coherence.

Chuquimamani-Condori is the native name of the Aymari multidisciplinary artist born in Riverside, California, as Elysia Chuquimia Paula Crampton. They have forged an extensive career as a performer, composer and producer of electronic music, as well as in the fields of the visual arts and poetry. Under their first project, called E+E, they released a couple of albums before adopting the name Elysia Crampton under which they released five albums and performed at La Casa Encendida in 2017 as part of the She Makes Noise festival. Chuquimamani-Condori is their current name, under which they have released two albums and created an exhibition at MoMA PS-1 with their artist brother Joshua Chuquimia Crampton.

Nídia & Valentina Magaletti

Nídia is an Afro-Portuguese electronic producer and DJ. Working with the Príncipe Discos label and art collective, she has played a decisive role both as an individual artist and as a key member of the community, bringing progressive and inspiring aesthetics and ethics to contemporary alternative dance across the globe and to the Kuduro culture in particular. The first album she released on Príncipe was Danger in 2015, when she still went by the name of Nídia Minaj. She followed it up with the debut LP Nídia é Má, Nídia é Fudida in 2017. Both were acclaimed by audiences and critics alike.

For this show, Nídia teams up with Valentina Magaletti. A drummer, composer and percussionist, Magaletti has a versatile technique that can incorporate anything from vibes and marimba to contact microphones and found objects, resulting in a constantly evolving style. She has played and co-written with numerous artists, like Nicolas Jaar, Jandek and Helm and Raime. On this occasion, she accompanies Nídia to deliver a more vibrant show with her percussive set-up.
