A portrait of greed and human irrationality in the quest to find El Dorado by the conquistador Lope de Aguirre. One of the great epics filmed by Herzog in the Amazon rainforest.

Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes

Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes (Aguirre, Wrath of God), by Werner Herzog Germany (FRG). 1972. 94’. Original soundtrack with Spanish subtitles.

In the mid-16th century, a Spanish expedition led by Gonzalo Pizarro and including the soldier Lope de Aguirre—played by a manic Klaus Kinski—embarks on a dangerous adventure through the mountains of Peru and across the River Amazon in search of El Dorado, the legendary city of gold.

The story of Aguirre, Wrath of Gold was just as epic behind the camera as it is on the screen, renowned as one of the most tense and troublesome shoots that has ever been known: the entire cast and crew had to climb mountains, cut down trees to open up paths and battle against treacherous weather conditions for the duration of the five-week shoot. It has not only earned cult status, but is widely considered to be one of the best films in the history of cinema.
